Patrick started in kart racing before joining the IndyCar Series in 2005, where she went on to be named Rookie of the Year. In 2008 she became the first woman to win and IndyCar race when she crossed the finish line in first place at the Indy Japan 300. In 2009, Patrick finished in third place at the Indianapolis 500, which was the highest finish by a woman in the history of that race. She continued to race on the IndyCar Series until 2011, when it was announced that she would compete on a limited schedule in the Sprint Cup Series with Stewart-Haas Racing. She made her Sprint Cup debut in the rain-delayed Daytona 500 on February 27, 2012 and finished in 38th place.
