Johnson wins at Martinsville

Jimmie Johnson held off Denny Hamlin on the last lap to cross the finish line first and claim the checkered flag in the Subway 500 at the Martinsville Speedway. The win moved Johnson up to fourth in the Nextel Cup standings, 51 points behind new Chase leader Matt Kenseth, who finished 11th Sunday.

Bobby Labonte was third on Sunday, followed by Tony Stewart in fourth and Jeff Gordon in fifth. Casey Mears was sixth and Kasey Kahne was seventh. Rounding out the rest of the top 10 at Martinsville were Jeff Green, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Petty.

With four races remaining Kenseth holds a 36-point lead on Harvick for first place in the Nextel Cup standings. Jeff Burton dropped to third after Martinsville, Johnson is now fourth and Hamlin improved to fifth. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is sixth in the standings followed by Mark Martin in seventh, Kasey Kahne in eighth, Jeff Gordon in ninth and Kyle Busch in tenth.

The drivers of NASCAR head to Phoenix International Raceway next week for the Checker Auto Parts 500.
