Pirates hold off Royals

The Pittsburgh Pirates held off a late rally to defeat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at PNC Park.

Pittsburgh won the game as +120 underdogs, while the eight runs went UNDER the posted over/under (8.5).

Nyjer Morgan led the Pirates with a two-run homer, while Jack Wilson and Jason Jaramillo also went deep. Virgil Vasquez collected his first win, and Matt Capps closed out the game with his 17th save.

Mark Teahen homered and scored twice for the Royals. Gil Meche surrendered five hits and four runs over five innings in the loss.
