Penny Taylor knocked down two free throws and made a big stop on defense to give the Phoenix Mercury a 78-77 win over the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA season opener at US Airways Center Saturday.
Los Angeles covered as a 6.5-point road underdog while the final score played UNDER the 176.5-point total.
Candace Dupree led the Mercury with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Diana Taurasi chipped in with 14 points in the win.
Candace Parker led the Sparks with 24 points and 12 boards. Rookie Andrea Riley added 16 points in her WNBA debut.
