Washington needed a shootout to earn a 5-4 victory over Toronto on Wednesday in NHL action at Verizon Center.

Green opened the scoring for Washington, finding the back of the net at 6:05 of the second period. The goal was assisted by Alexander Semin and Alex Ovechkin.

Michal Neuvirth turned in a 24-save effort for the Capitals.

Tomas Kaberle, Kris Versteeg, Nikolai Kulemin, and Tyler Bozak scored for the Maple Leafs, finding the net behind Michal Neuvirth.

Jonas Gustavsson stopped 26 of 30 shots for the Maple Leafs, but it wasn't enough to earn the victory.

Washington scored 2 times on 4 chances on the power play, while Toronto went 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

Washington outshot Toronto 30-28 in the game.

Next game, Washington takes its act home to face Boston looking for another win. For Toronto, they head home to face Buffalo.
