Sergei Samsonov clinched the win with a shootout goal in round 3 for the Hurricanes. Carolina got goals from Eric Staal and Brandon Sutter in the victory. Sutter opened the scoring at 0:26 of the third period.
Cam Ward turned in a 45-save effort for the Hurricanes.
Anthony Stewart and Evander Kane scored for the Thrashers, finding the net behind Cam Ward.
Chris Mason stopped 27 of 29 shots for the Thrashers, but it wasn't enough to earn the victory.
On the power play, Carolina went 0-for-2, while the Thrashers were 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
Carolina lost the shots on goal battle to Atlanta by a margin of 47-29.
Next game, Carolina takes its act home to face Anaheim looking for another win. For Atlanta, they head home to face New Jersey.
