Washington earned a 5-4 victory over New York on Tuesday, but needed a shootout to do it at Nassau Coliseum.

Washington won as a -110 favorite, while Over-Under bettors who played OVER the total of 5.5 were rewarded at the payout window.

The win was clinched by Matt Hendricks, who beat Evgeni Nabokov in a shootout to gain the extra point in the standings for Washington. Alex Ovechkin (2), Mike Knuble, and Dmitry Orlov each scored for the Capitals in the victory. Knuble opened the scoring for Washington, finding the back of the net at 9:33 of the second period. The goal was assisted by Dennis Wideman and Keith Aucoin.

Michal Neuvirth stopped 26 of 30 New York shots in the victory.

John Tavares (2), Matt Moulson, and Travis Hamonic scored for the Islanders, finding the net behind Michal Neuvirth.

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 24 of 28 shots for the Islanders, but it wasn't enough to earn the victory.

Washington scored 0 times on 0 chances on the power play, while New York went 2-for-5 with the man advantage.

Washington lost the shots on goal battle to New York by a margin of 30-28.

Washington heads into a battle against the Jets. New York, meanwhile, will have their next action against Philadelphia.
