Academy Awards Future Odds

It’s award season in Hollywood which means it also time for bettors to possibly make some money of their own on the movies. The Academy Award nominees won’t be released until February, but the best picture future odds are already available over at Sportsbook who are the first to market with Oscars odds. Right now, the best picture favorite in Hollywood circles and over at Sportsbook is Up in the Air. The George Clooney vehicle has been showing up on most critics best of the year lists and has already snagged the best film award from the National Board of Review. It’s listed as 3/1 on the best picture odds front and with the buzz it’s generating despite not even having opened nation wide yet it looks like a smart pick right now. Before Up in the Air started receiving all the pre-Oscar glory the big contender was considered to be the critics summer darling, The Hurt Locker. The Iraq bomb squad tour de force landed on top of most of the critics bests list that weren’t topped by Up in the Air. The biggest hurdle for The Hurt Locker is that unlike most Oscar favorites it didn’t debut during the fall and unlike Up in the Air it doesn’t have a big star like Clooney carrying it or a up and coming director like Jason Reitman helming it. That’s why despite all the critics buzz, The Hurt Locker is just behind Up in the Air at Sportsbook at 7/2. If Up in the Air and The Hurt Locker at the true Oscars favorites, the underdogs are Precious and Inglorious Basterds. Precious has gone from obscurity to gaining national attention due to big backing by Oprah and Tyler Perry. Anything with Oprah’s name on it always does big business, but is it enough for gain the Academy’s vote? Sportsbook has it down at 6/1. Inglorious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino’s Nazi killing romp, may not fit the regular best picture mold, what with it’s sometimes farcical nature and graphic gory violence, but it’s got Tarantino’s name on it, which makes it a contender. It comes in at 15/2 at Sportsbook. One thing bettors have to consider is that the best picture nominees are growing this year from five to 10. With five more films to consider that could divide voting and lead to an upset. It will also mean a film like Star Trek to earn a best picture nod. But, unless the academy is overrun by sci-fi nerds Trek likely has no shot at actually winning any best picture hardware. 2010 Academy Awards – Odds to Win Best Picture at Sportsbook, which is celebrating the 12 Days of Poker, a terrific poker promotion over the holidays.
