Alamo Bowl odds preview

The Michigan State Spartans could use a bowl win after their disappointing end to the season and their off-field trouble, but they’ll have to fight for it as an underdog to Texas Tech on the Alamo Bowl odds.

Michigan State vs. Texas Tech -8, OU 60.5 at Bovada
9 pm EST, January 2, 2010, Alamo Dome, San Antonio, TX

The Spartans lost three of their final five games and had their team torn apart by an on-campus fight between players and fraternity members. The fight will keep at least 10 of the Spartans from playing in the Alamo Dome. Michigan State’s end of season slump and numerous suspensions is reason enough to list them as an 8-point underdog at Bovada.

The Red Raiders won four of their final six games this season, which included upset victories over Oklahoma and Nebraska. Despite those upsets Texas Tech still finished 5-3 in the Big 12 with losses to Texas, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.

The Spartans (6-6 SU, 5-6 ATS) had the top passing attack in the Big Ten this season led by quarterback Kirk Cousins. He passed for 2460 yards with 18 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. Unfortunately the Spartan defense as just as bad against the pass, allowing a Big Ten worst 2516 yards and 29 touchdowns, with only five interceptions.

The Red Raiders (8-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) were also a pass-heavy offense this season and led the Big 12 in passing yards. This also meant they were dead last in rushing in the conference. Quarterback Taylor Potts threw for 3068 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

There are no major injury concerns for the game, but the Spartans will be missing three starters due to suspension. Those three starters include DB Chris L. Rankin, and WRs Mark Dell and B.J. Cunningham.
