Future Betting Lines

The Pittsburgh Steelers hadn't even finished off their rally to beat the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII when online sportsbooks had opened the Patriots as favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV.

Future betting (aka betting on futures) such as Who will win the Super Bowl have grown in popularity in recent years. And it’s not just in football, although preseason future bets on which team will win the AFC East, who will win the BCS College Football Championship and other fun pigskin bets are in vogue.

Just about every sport offers you the chance to get great longshot odds in predicting its next champion. Soon after the Detroit Red Wings won the 2008 Stanley Cup, they were installed as favorites to win again in 2009. Adding Marian Hossa to the roster only helped cement that opinion.

The Boston Celtics remained the top choice in NBA future odds lists long after their 2008 celebration was over. And the Yankees moved quickly to the top of the World Series odds list after their raids in free agency, even though the defending champion Phillies were getting the job done (the Phils were at 12/1 in January).

Why do people bet on futures? Is it a good idea?

Sports fans like the notion of being smarter than everyone else almost as much as they like the idea of winning money. So being able to pick the Super Bowl winner way back in August makes you the smartest handicapper in town.

You can also get tremendous longshot odds on future bets if you are clever or lucky. Recall the 1999 St. Louis Rams, who started off as 300-1 underdogs on Super Bowl future bets. What a nice payoff for bettors who put a few bucks down on that.

The problem with future betting is that it takes six months or longer to grade your bet. That’s a long time to have a part of betting bankroll locked into a bet. But if you pick a small amount as future betting fun money, it can produce nice profits for you.

And the best thing about prop bets and future bets is that different sportsbooks offer a unique set of betting options. So you can find something interesting and you can compare odds to get the best deal.
