Super Bowl Betting

It’s called Super Sunday, advertisers pay millions for 30-second clips and sportsbooks offer so many different types of football odds that it makes the head spin.

It’s all part of Super Bowl betting, the biggest day of the year for sportsbooks. It can make or break their entire season if they suffer a bad result (like Super Bowl 42 when the Giants upset of the Patriots cost books millions).

It can also put the topping on a terrific season of NFL profits, whether it’s a significant single bet or many bets on the various Super Bowl props that populate odds menus for this game.

Point Spreads Just the Start

Of course, betting the ATS winner of the Super Bowl is a must for any self-respecting football bettor. Will the favorite cover or will the underdog bite? The past two Super Bowls, the underdogs from the NFC covered the spread (although Pittsburgh rallied late to win Super Bowl XLIII over Arizona).

A year earlier, it was Super Bowl money line betting that made the biggest profits for bettors. The Giants were as high as +300 to win outright against the 18-0 Patriots. But the late Plaxico Burres TD reception from Eli Manning sealed the win and everyone who bet the Giants to cover 12 points AND everyone who bet them on the money line won!

Super Bowl totals

Betting the over under had been a reliable UNDER wager in recent years and Super Bowl XLIII was headed the same before three late TDs pushed the game OVER. Before that, four previous Super Bowls all went UNDER the number.

Handicapping the total requires heavy research into the game plans of each team. Does the running team want to grind the clock? Does the offensive team run a no-huddle offense which produces scores in bunches?

As a general rule, the players have no reason to hold anything back in the biggest game of the year, which promots many sportsbooks like to offer totals that may seem a bit high. Many recreational bettors want to bet the OVER and with such tremendous handle (amount of betting) on Super Bowl Sunday, the books can win big if the game goes UNDER.

Super Bowl Props and Contests

Who wants to have two weeks of crazed hype and only make a bet on the side and total? It’s the biggest game of the year and sportsbooks offer hundreds of prop bets, ranging from the coin toss to which team will issue the first referee challenge of the game.

The coin toss, by the way, has been won 13 of the past 15 games by the NFC. So much for this being a 50-50 proposition!

Fantasy football GMs often clean up on Super Bowl Sunday as betting on QB vs QB or RB vs RB is often right up their alley. There are even over-under bets on how many yards the tight end will have, will the kicker miss his first FG attempt and who will be leading at halftime.

These Super Bowl props often form the basis of most cool Super Bowl contests. Pick a list of 25 questions off the props list at or another reputable sportsbook and then make picks. Everyone throws $10 into the hat and winner takes all.

If setting up your own contest is a pain, sites like offer fun contests, some with $100,000 grand prizes and other perks like TVs, account credits and more.

So whether you are a professional NFL bettor looking to turn a profit on the final weekend or a recreational bettor making your first wager, the Super Bowl is a terrific game to have action on.
