Betting on Tour de Lance

The Tour de France is underway in Europe will cycling legend Lance Armstrong looking for his eighth career win.

The illustrious race is easily the most famous cycling event in the world. I’d actually be surprised if most people can name another one.

That doesn’t mean it’s very exciting to watch though. Turn on the coverage for a few minutes and they flick thirties minutes and the only thing that will have changed is the background behind the big pack of cyclers.

Armstrong’s return probably amps up the ratings a bit, but if the Tour wants to pull in an audience in the future how about having all the riders drive old banana seat Schwinn’s with baseball cards in the spokes, or throw a few ringers in the race driving famous TV or movie bikes. I call the bike from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.

Tour de France odds - Bet on the yellow jersey

At least you don’t have to watch all the coverage to bet the Tour de France. On Wednesday the riders entered Stage 5 after what was dubbed an amazing fourth stage a day earlier.

Heading in Stage 4 Armstrong was trailing Fabian Cancellara by about 41 seconds, but made up a huge amount of time and nearly took over the yellow jersey at the stage’s finish line. Cancellara’s time at the end of the stage was 10:38:07, while Armstrong was mere milliseconds behind.

Armstrong not favored?

Despite the close race for the lead between Armstrong and Cancellara neither was the favorite to win it all at Bovada heading into Stage 5. Armstrong was still near the top of the latest odds at 5/2, but Cancellara isn’t expected to remain with the frontrunners at 50/1.

The favorite is Armstrong’s Astana teammate Alberto Contador at 2/3 at Bovada. He is well within reach of the top spot sitting in third right behind Armstrong heading into the fifth stage.

With two of the favorites, Armstrong and Contador, already ahead of the pack so early in the race it could be an interesting fight between the two of them for the yellow jersey on a daily basis through the rest of the event.
