Boxing Betting Odds: January Preview

As boxing betting fans look forward to 2013 the month of January will offer a number of prize fights on which to wager. The sportsbooks are already offering action on two title fights, with Frankie Gavin and Daniel Geale both defending their respective belts.

Gavin (14-0) will defend his British Welterweight title against Jason Welborn (11-1) on January 18 as a heavy favorite. Gavin is positioning himself in the upper echelon of the Welterweight rankings and should have an easy time against Welborn.

Oddsmakers at Sportsbook have the champ handicapped as a huge boxing odds -4500 favorite, while the unlikely Welborn upset option is currently worth a +1500 payday. With only four of his eleven wins coming via KO, Welborn doesn’t really have a puncher’s chance and will need the performance of his life to pull off the upset.

Gavin has been a wrecking machine, recording 10 of his 14 wins via knockout. He’s expected to be way too much for his opponent in this fight and should be both the harder hitter and the better boxer.

Later in the month on January 30 Daniel Geale (28-1) will put his IBF Middleweight title on the line against former IOB Middleweight and WBA Super Middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (44-4) in an attempt to avenge his only professional loss. The first fight was a close battle that ended in a split decision, but it’s Geale who has evolved the most since their first meeting.

Geale is coming off a title unification win over longtime WBA Super Middleweight champion Felix Sturm and is currently a boxing odds -360 favorite at Sportsbook to defend his title. The Mundine upset will currently pay +270, but at 37 years old he’s not likely to have anything new to show the vastly improved Geale, or boxing betting fans, this time around.
