McGregor vs Malignaggi Betting Odds

One subplot nobody could’ve expected in the lead-up to Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather was the Irishman’s sparring session with Paulie Malignaggi. What was supposed to be nothing more than in-ring training for McGregor turned into a social media firestorm that consumed the combat sports world.

UFC president Dana White released a short clip of the sparring session between McGregor and Malignaggi in which it appears that Conor got the best of the former world champion. However, not all sides involved think so.

“[McGregor] constantly puts me in the press with these edited videos, edited pictures and whatnot. Now, it’s picked up a ton of momentum. So yeah. So now the bad blood is there,” Malignaggi said on The MMA Hour. “Now, we’ve gotta fight.”

And thus began the speculation.

Both camps have been trading verbal jabs for some time and it seems that a collision may be inevitable. Bovada released preliminary odds on August 15, with McGregor opening at +175 and Malignaggi coming back at -225 for a potential boxing match.

Malignaggi is not on the same level as Mayweather – nobody is – but he held titles in two divisions and amassed an impressive 36-8 professional boxing record. Though Malignaggi suffered some knockouts later in his career, he still showed in his most recent fight against Sam Eggington that he has the ability to injure his opponent.

McGregor is one of the best mixed martial artists in the world but boxing limits his overall craft. There is no doubt he fared better than many expected against Mayweather, but he was simply outclassed once “Money” got going.
