Alvarez vs Chavez Jr. Prop Betting Odds

Cinco de Mayo weekend is always a massive one for bettors between the Kentucky Derby and whatever huge boxing card takes place. This year is no different with the slate of boxing action highlighted by Canelo Alvarez taking on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in Las Vegas.

Of course, with such a big bout headlining what should be a fun night of action, bettors shouldn’t limit themselves to just straight-up bets. There are plenty of props you can get for Canelo vs Chavez and here are a couple that may be worth a look.

Canelo Alvarez By KO, TKO or DQ (-105)

Canelo enters this fight as a huge favorite and he deserves that distinction considering the level of competition he has faced. Not only that, Canelo has proven time and time again that his left hand is plenty capable of leveling his opponent. Alvarez didn’t specifically say he will win by KO, but he did say that there is a high likelihood that this fight ends with someone looking at the lights based on their styles.

It’s hard to disagree, especially with four of Canelo’s past six fights seeing the Mexican superstar winning via KO or TKO. Putting Chavez away isn’t easy and getting inside his significant reach advantage will be critical for Canelo, but laying -105 for a victory via KO is much better than the -650 straight up.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. On Points (+700)

Many people are already saying that Chavez will be outclassed in this bout and I’m not going to fault a soul for saying that. But Chavez is going to have a clear size advantage and he will need to use this. He will basically need to go in for a brute-force approach and bully Canelo.

Chavez should either fight from a great distance or suffocate Canelo. Getting into a firefight with Canelo is not typically the smartest choice but Chavez likely won’t have the speed and footwork to dance around the outside like he probably should – especially after cutting weight. If you are confident in taking Chavez, maybe backing him at +450 is enough for you but I don’t see him being able to finish a durable fighter like Canelo.

Prediction

I’m not doubting Chavez as much as others seem to be. Chavez knows this is a make-or-break fight for his career. A victory in this one and he is set for life but a loss and he further descends into relative obscurity. That being said, Canelo is too much for Chavez. He is a better fighter in basically every aspect of the game and that will ultimately shine through. I’m taking Canelo by KO/TKO in the ninth round, two things that if parlayed pay out roughly 28-to-1.
