USA still favored in Olympic hoops
With the preliminary round of the Olympic men's basketball event about to be wrapped up the United States remains the big favorite at the sportsbooks to head home from London with the gold medal.
The Americans are undefeated at 4-0 through their first four games of the tournament, and they can run that record to 5-0 on Monday as they take on Argentina as a 23.5-point favorite on the basketball lines at Bovada.
The United States got a wakeup call in their last game on Saturday, failing to cover the posted spread in a slim 99-94 victory over Lithuania.
LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony each scored 20 points for the United States in that win, with Kevin Durant adding 16 points, and Deron Williams tossing in 12 points. Kobe Bryant scored six points in that contest in 20 minutes of action.
The Americans had previously picked up easy wins over France (98-71), Tunisia (110-63), and Nigeria (156-73) before cutting it close against Lithuania on the weekend. They've outscored their opponents 463-301 through four games.
Argentina sits at 3-1 heading into their game against the United States on Monday, beating Lithuania (102-79), Tunisia (92-69), and Nigeria (93-79), but falling to France by a score of 71-64. Argentina beat the United States 89-81 in the semifinals of the Olympic men's basketball tournament in 2004 in Athens.
The United States is the 1/20 favorite on the basketball odds at Bovada to win the gold medal this week, with Spain (12/1), Russia (20/1), and Argentina (28/1) following them on that list.
The quarterfinals of the Olympic men's basketball tournament will be played on Wednesday, with the semifinals on Friday, and the bronze medal and gold medal games then being contested on Sunday.
