Chick-fil-A Bowl Odds Preview

The Tennessee Volunteers take on the Virginia Tech Hokies and VT is favored by 9 points in this game and their defense is the main reason why.

Tennessee Volunteers (7-5) vs. Virginia Tech Hokies (9-3)

Virginia Tech (9-3 6-5-1 ATS) is really hoping the 3rd time is the charm for them in Atlanta, where the Chick-fil-A Bowl will be held, as the Hokies are 0-2 in the city losing to Alabama and Georgia Tech there this season. There is a good chance of rain in this game and that would favor the Hokies since they have a stronger rushing attack. This is another reason Bovada has Virginia Tech as a 9 point favorite in this game. The Hokies ended the season on fire winning their last four games and this season they were 2-2 against teams ranked in the top 25.

Tennessee (7-5 7-5 ATS) was 1-2 against ranked teams this season and they also finished well winning four of their last five games including their last two. New head coach Lane Kiffin has UT heading in the right direction, but can they score on the Hokies and their awesome defense? That is a big question, but the Volunteers are no slouch on defense either, so this may be a low scoring defensive battle.

Tennessee has the nation’s 48th ranked offense and 18th ranked defense while Virginia Tech ranked 55th on offense and 14th on defense.

The Volunteers have a very well balanced offense led by QB Jonathan Crompton (2,565 yds 26 TD 12 INT) and RB Montario Hardesty (1,306 yds 12 TD). In his last five games of the season Hardesty rushed for 586 yards with 6 TD’s. Crompton has a legit receiving corps, but the UT offensive line has to give him time in the pocket to find them. This season the Hokies had 30 sacks, so the Volunteers offensive line has to play well.

Virginia Tech has the nation’s 55th ranked offense led by QB Tyrod Taylor (2,102 yds 13 TD 4 INT), who also had he also had 344 rushing yards and 4 TD’s this season.  The Hokies’ passing offense ranks 99th in the nation and their strength is running the ball led by RB Ryan Williams (1,538 yds 19 TD), who is hard to bring down and was just shy of averaging 6 yards per carry this season. Tennessee has a great defense, but their rushing defense is their weakness, which is not good facing a back like Williams.

The Volunteers are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games and the Hokies are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.

Chick-fil-A Bowl History

In last year’s Chick-fil-A Bowl LSU absolutely crushed Georgia Tech 38-3 in a game that was never close.

LSU was favored by a mere 3 points, so they barely covered the spread and the posted total of 53 was not reached.
