Favorites rally in Week 14

NFL favorites rallied to a 10-6 ATS win over underdogs in Week 14, but the players still suffered when many of the big public chalk went down in flames.

While the Vikings, Colts and Eagles were all covering the spread, the Steelers lost outright at Cleveland in a game where the betting public was heavily on Pitt at sportsbooks such as Bovada.

The Saints were being backed heavily as well and barely won at Atlanta, failing to cover 10 points in their 26-23 win.

The Patriots won 20-10 but did not cover 13.5 points at home to Carolina. Sportsbooks like Bovada also got some Monday Night relief from the 49ers as they won easily against a horribly sloppy Cardinals team that came in as 4-point road chalk.

Road favorites performed very well led by the Redskins, Eagles, Bills and Jets, going 5-2 ATS. Big favorites struggled mightily again, burning recreational football bettors who pounded the Pats, Saints and Steelers.

However, the Titans covered big against the Rams and Baltimore destroyed Detroit to give the double-digit chalk some relief at 2-3 ATS for the week. (Check out the NFL line moves and handicapping matchups and betting trends this week in the {URL=} football stats section{/URL}.)

Home teams split right down the middle with visitors, going 8-8 on the week. And once again, the UNDER proved to be the money-making choice for total bettors (UNDERs prevailed 11-5 against the OVERs).

Week 15 lookahead

Both of your 13-0 teams are done by the time Sunday rolls around so if you want to bet for or against the Colts or Saints, better get your money down Thursday and Saturday.

Indy visits Jacksonville on Thursday night in an AFC South battle. While the Jags are 7-3 ATS in 10 games against the Colts, another trend is a tough one to overcome. The Colts have won 10 of 11 SU on the road and they are a bankroll-padding 9-2 ATS in those 11 games!

New Orleans is favored by 7 point at home to slumping Dallas as the Saints push for 14-0. Dallas has not beaten the Saints since 1994 (0-5 SU and ATS) and have not covered a spread since 1991. They play Saturday night.
Dallas’ December woes have been well-documented, but looking at the stats since 2006, it’s even grimmer. The Cowboys are 2-13 ATS in 15 December games.

On Sunday, the Patriots visit Buffalo, which is routinely a Pats win and cover (8-1 SU and 7-2 ATS past 9 trips to Rich Stadium). They have outscored the Bills 163-40 in the past five wins here, so the ATS result has never been in doubt.

On Monday night, the Giants visit Washington in a must-win for the G-Men. They put up nearly 550 yards of offense against the Eagles, but were victimized by big plays. The Giants are 6-1 SU and 5-1-1 ATS past 7 vs the Redskins.

Of note, the Giants have played five division games in 2009 so far and all five played OVER the total.
