British Open: Sleeper Picks

Betting on golf can be an exhilarating endeavor, but it can also be an extremely frustrating one.

That’s why it’s important to pick your spots when it comes to betting long shot value. With this year’s edition of the Open rapidly coming up, I’ve set my sights on three specific golfers who could create big payouts if they can take home the hardware.

Why should you listen to me? If you’ll recall my Masters sleeper piece, I correctly picked eventual champion Danny Willett at +3300 odds. We hope you were listening!

Here are my three British Open sleeper picks:

Louis Oosthuizen (+4500)

Louis Oosthuizen is one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour, and his track record at the British Open speaks for itself. The South African finished in second at both the 2015 Open Championship and the U.S. Open and has placed inside the top-20 five times in his last seven major appearances.

Oosthuizen triumphed at the 2010 Open, separating himself from the field to the tune of a seven-stroke victory. He doesn’t get much of the spotlight, but I wouldn’t be surprised to once again see “Oost” in the mix on Sunday.

Matt Kuchar (+6600)

How is Matt Kuchar listed so far down at +6600? Kuchar is on fire right now, as the 38-year-old has collected five top-6 finishes in his past six tournaments. He hasn’t won since 2014, but he’s seemingly always in the hunt. The Florida native has five top-10 finishes in his previous six events.

Dustin Johnson broke his major slump last month at Oakmont Country Club, and the timing looks right for Kuchar to do the same at Royal Troon. Hesitant to back him? Keep this in mind: Kuchar has placed in the top-10 seven times at the Open.

Graeme McDowell (+9000)

It’s no secret Graeme McDowell’s best playing days are behind him, but the Northern Irishman loves playing on his home continent. McDowell has 10 wins on the European Tour compared to just three on the PGA Tour.

He had the worst year of his professional career in 2015, missing the cut on seven occasions in 15 attempts. G-Mac has regained his form in 2016, culminating in a 10th place finish in the Scottish Open last week. McDowell has three top-10s and five top-25s in 12 career outings at the Open.
