With major season officially over, the Travelers Championship marks the next stop for the PGA Tour.
Due to its new position on the calendar behind the PGA Championship, the field isn’t particularly deep for the event. Reigning champion Bubba Watson is the top golfer at the tournament, and that’s why Sportsbook has tabbed him as a +1200 favorite.
Branden Grace (+1600), Brooks Koepka (+1600), Matt Kuchar (+2000), Patrick Reed (+2000), Zach Johnson (+2500), Jon Rahm (+2800), Paul Casey (+2800), J.B. Holmes (+3300) and Jim Furyk (+3300) round out the top 10 at the shop.
The Travelers, which takes place at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, is not usually played in early August but it was moved this year as a result of golf’s inclusion into the Olympic Games.
Rahm is a player to watch this weekend. The young Spaniard’s second place finish at the RBC Canadian Open clinched special temporary status for the rest of the season, which means the newly-turned pro will be looking to capitalize.
Six of the last 10 Travelers winners were first-time participants, so a surprise champion isn’t out of the realm of possibility. There have been a ton of surprises in the golfing world this year, highlighted by four players (Danny Willett, Dustin Johnson, Henrik Stenson and Jimmy Walker) garnering major titles for the first time in their careers.
Three members of the American Olympic team, Watson, Kuchar and Reed, will be teeing it up in New England. With the Olympics so close and the pressure starting to mount, it may be wise to steer clear of the aforementioned golfers.
