2021 Shriners Children’s Open Odds, Picks And Betting Predictions

Sam Burns came through in a big way last week at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Capturing his second career victory, the 25-year-old is on the cusp of a monster 2021-22 PGA Tour season. There is no rest for the weary as Burns and ourselves turn our attention to the 2021 Shriners Children’s Open and the betting odds for the third event of the season.

TPC Summerlin has been a staple on the golf calendar for the last couple of decades as players make their way to Las Vegas. Coupled with the CJ Cup, a two-week stint in Sin City could spell trouble for those who enjoy the finer things in life. However, those who keep their eyes on the prize will need to overcome the strongest field of the young season.

Eleven of the top 25 in the world are teeing it up at the Shriners Children’s Open with Brooks Koepka, Harris English and Louis Oosthuizen leading the way. I am a bit surprised to not see Patrick Cantlay and Bryson DeChambeau in the field as both have taken to TPC Summerlin in the past, capturing a victory here within the last five years.

Cantlay had an incredible opportunity to capture yet another Shriners Children’s Open last season, leading at the 54-hole mark. However, it was not meant to be as Martin Laird eventually came through in Las Vegas. Facing off against Matthew Wolff and Austin Cook in a playoff, the Scotsman secured his second career victory at TPC Summerlin and his first victory in more than seven years.

Looking to carry the momentum from the U.S. Ryder Cup victory from Wisconsin to Nevada is Brooks Koepka. Possessing a mixed bag of missed cuts and a couple of top-five finishes, Koepka is +2200 at Sportsbook to win the Shriners Children’s Open. According to our odds calculator, this implies a 4.76 percent chance that Koepka begins his 2021-22 PGA Tour season with a bang.

Course And Analysis

A par 71, TPC Summerlin will once again welcome the PGA Tour to Las Vegas this week. Measuring to just about 7,255 yards, there have been a number of ways through which players have been successful on this Bobby Weed design.

Finishing at 23 under last season, Laird finished second in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, fourth in SG: Approach, fifth in fairways hit, first in par-5 scoring, and second in eagles made. Arguably the shot of the tournament, it was on the par-5 ninth on Sunday where Laird made an unlikely eagle from a horrible lie in the greenside bunker.

The year before, Kevin Na also finished at 23 under, albeit in a much, much different fashion. Recording the then best putting performance of the strokes-gained era (since surpassed by Cantlay at the BMW Championship), the 2019 champion posted +14.2 SG: Putting. Losing strokes to the field off the tee and around the green, there is not a whole lot we can take from Na’s victory from a statistical perspective.

Instead, we will look to DeChambeau’s Shriners Children’s Open the previous year as our last use-case. The then skinny DeChambeau took a more conventional route to success, eventually getting the better of Cantlay, who had won the year before. Ranking first in SG: Tee-to-Green, third in SG: Approach, first in par-4 scoring and first in bogey avoidance, DeChambeau was steady throughout the bag.

With Cantlay and DeChambeau finding so much success at TPC Summerlin, I can’t help but think about Muirfield Village, a place where both have won before. The Shriners Children’s Open could take on a similar feel with less of a need to hit fairways and more opportunities to score.

Simply put, for the Shriners Children’s Open, a strong tee-to-green presence – specifically on approach – with some skill from 200-plus yards is an ideal framework for a potential Sportsbook. Couple that with taking advantage of the three par 5s and the inherent ability to go low and we should have a decent angle.

The latter may be most important as the cutline last season ended up being 7 under, similar to last week’s 5-under cutline, so just making it to the weekend requires solid play at the Shriners Children’s Open.

2021 Shriners Children’s Open Expert Picks

Harris English (+2800 To Win)

I assume many will look to last year’s tournament, recognize certain players missed the cut, and leave it at that. However, a cutline at 7 under is unprecedented even for the current PGA Tour. English unfortunately was one of those players to fall victim to the low scores, as the former Georgia Bulldog posted rounds of 68-69 to miss the weekend by two strokes.

Two wins, a full season and a Ryder Cup appearance later, English should arrive to Las Vegas brimming with confidence. A proven Sportsbook, albeit with some unfortunate finishes as well, English has time and time again played himself into contention.

With no glaring weaknesses in his bag, he coupled his two victories last season with close calls at the Palmetto Championship, the U.S. Open and the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. One of those victories came at TPC River Highlands, a course Bobby Weed had some influence in designing. Clearly comfortable with the layout and sightlines, English should be able to put together another strong week in Las Vegas, as he finished in a tie for fourth in 2016.

Patrick Reed (+4000 To Win)

We’ve seen in the first couple weeks of the PGA Tour season that the Ryder Cup is on everyone’s mind. Max Homa has discussed at length wanting to make the next team whether in Charlotte for the Presidents Cup or in Italy for the Ryder Cup. Then we saw Sam Burns, who was on captain Steve Stricker’s shortlist for Whistling Straits, capture the Sanderson Farms Championship last weekend.

If those two are considered “motivated,” I am not sure there is a word out there to accurately describe Reed. Missing the U.S. team due to a poor back half of the season and major health concerns down the stretch, the 31-year-old is set to begin the new season in Las Vegas for the first time since 2012.

With plenty of time to digest the Ryder Cup, I am expecting Reed’s midsummer form to return for the Shriners Children’s Open. Seeing a three-week stretch of golf with performances of +11.5, +4.5 and +7.8 SG: Tee-to-Green, Reed had strong showings at both the Memorial and the Travelers Championship. Perhaps, stretching some possible correlation between those two courses and TPC Summerlin, Reed’s win upside at this number makes him an addition to our card.

Adam Scott (+5000 To Win)

We haven’t seen Scott here stateside since a brutal playoff loss at the Wyndham Championship preceded a forgettable FedExCup playoff run. Missing the cut at The Northern Trust, the Australian took a couple weeks off before heading to England for the BMW PGA Championship. Finishing in a tie for 14th, Scott was in contention up until the final day of play.

Starting the final round in the same position as eventual Sportsbook Billy Horschel, Scott carded a disappointing round of 1 under, while Horschel clipped him by six strokes that Sunday. On the shoulders of strong ball-striking and a new-found romance with the broomstick, Scott continued a late-summer/early-fall surge.

Top-20 finishes at the Memorial and the Travelers Championship saw the 41-year-old rely heavily on his putting, something he is hardly accustomed to. With his tee-to-green prowess resurfacing in Greensboro and again in England, I am willing to chance it does so again this week in Las Vegas.

Making his first Shriners Children’s Open appearance since 2019, Scott finished in a tie for 42nd two years ago. Posting +4.9 SG: Putting, a comfort level was clearly established on the greens, meaning the broomstick and his historically competent tee-to-green game should feel right at home at TPC Summerlin.

Mito Pereira (+5000 To Win)

I promise this will be the last time we go to Pereira, but once the 2021 Shriners Children’s Open odds were released, I could not help myself. Especially considering the ball-striking figures that came out of the Country Club of Jackson, the Chilean is just an adequate week on the greens away from his maiden PGA Tour victory.

Finishing in a tie for 31st at the Sanderson Farms Championship, Pereira posted +2.21 SG: Off-the-Tee and +5.57 SG: Approach, finishing 20th and fourth respectively in those categories. With his putter nowhere to be seen, I am hoping the 26-year-old can find it in Las Vegas. It was just a few months ago in Minnesota, on bent grass greens, that Pereira posted +3.8 SG: Putting.

With his three Korn Ferry Tour victories coming at 27 under, 21 under and 20 under, if this thing turns into a shootout – which it typically does – Pereira is well-equipped. While it may seem like we are chasing, Pereira did enough last week to solidify his spot on the Shriners Children’s Open card.

Here’s a helpful guide to some of the different betting options for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open to help you put some extra cash in your pocket while wagering on golf.

Props

Golf is unique for many reasons, but one of them is the significant number of betting props available at weekly tournaments. The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is no different for prop bets!

Sportsbooks are offering odds on things like whether there will be a hole-in-one, OVER/UNDERs on the winning score for the eventual champion and odds on which players from specific countries will have the lowest score, to name a few.

Like other sports, betting on props is a fun and unique way to enhance your golf gambling experience.

Live Betting

Live Betting is arguably one of the most exciting ways to bet on golf. If the player you placed a pre-tournament bet on is out of the running at any point during the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, you can bet on another golfer as the days go by and have another stake in the game.

If there are only a few men in the hunt on the final day, the odds likely won’t be significantly high, but your chances of winning are. We’ve seen this happen multiple times in the PGA Tour’s Return to Golf, as multiple tournaments have gone to a playoff.
