Wells Fargo Championship Odds & Betting Preview

The Wells Fargo Championship takes place this weekend in a new setting in Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, North Carolina due to the normal course, Quail Hollow Club, hosting the PGA Championship in August.

When it comes to odds lists at Bovada, Dustin Johnson headlines things at +450 odds. Jon Rahm (+1100), Adam Scott (+1600), Paul Casey (+2000), Kevin Kisner (+2200), Phil Mickelson (+2500), Bill Haas (+2800), Webb Simpson (+2800), Patrick Reed (+3300) and Daniel Berger (+3500) comprise the rest of the top 10.

The world No. 1 Johnson is making his first appearance since suffering a freak stairs accident before the Masters. Six of the top 20 golfers in the world rankings are set to tee it up in North Carolina.

A year ago James Hahn, who had missed his previous eight cuts at the tournament, outlasted big names like Rory McIlroy, Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Justin Rose to earn his second PGA Tour victory. Hahn emerged triumphant after besting Roberto Castro in a playoff despite making a three-putt bogey on the final hole. The 35-year-old is a long shot once again this time around at +12500 odds.

Johnson’s return will undoubtedly be the biggest storyline this weekend. Before falling down the stairs at his rented house in Augusta, Johnson had won his previous three starts including both the WGC-Mexico Championship and WGC-Dell Match Play. While the American is an absolute beast, I’m not sure if it’s a good strategy to back him pre-tournament due to the extended time off. If he’s in the mix on Sunday, however, it’s a much different story.

It’s going to be interesting to see how much the change of venue factors into the tournament. Quail Hollow is known as an extremely tough course, as 2011 champion Lucas Glover is the only man to ever post all four rounds in the 60s. In 2016, nobody had more than two sub-70 rounds.
