Golf Odds: U.S. Open Betting

The U.S. Open returns to the Congressional Country Club this week with everyone hoping to take full advantage of Tiger Woods' absence.

With Woods out of the tournament with a knee injury the favorite in the tournament at Bovada is Lee Westwood at 11/1. In the last three years Westwood has been a constant on the leaderboard at most major tournaments but he is still looking for his first major victory. Last year he finished second in both the Masters and the British Open, and he finished third at the U.S. Open in 2008. Will Westwood finally break through with his first major at Congressional, or will he continue to be the one who comes up just short?

The U.S. Open was lasted played at Congressional in 1997. That year Ernie Els won his second U.S. Open championship after edging Colin Montgomerie by one stroke. Els is an underdog to win another U.S. Open this week at Bovada at 66/1.

Els isn't the only one that's won at Congressional in this week's U.S. Open field. Congressional also was the venue for the AT&T National in 2007, 2008, and 2009. K.J. Choi won the tournament in 2007, Anthony Kim hoisted the trophy in 2008, and Woods won there in 2009. Choi has never won a major, but he does have a win on tour this season and could be worth at least a couple bucks at Bovada at 28/1.

Kim was expected to be a contender in every major of the next decade, but since returning from a wrist injury last year he's missed the cut in both the PGA Championship and the Masters. Kim looks like an unnecessary risk for bettors as a 100/1 longshot at Bovada.

The defending U.S. Open champ heading into Congressional is Graeme McDowell. He shocked everyone with his first PGA win at Pebble Beach, but he has had success on the European Tour before so he shouldn't be consider a one-hit wonder like Michael Campbell. McDowell is a 40/1 underdog to repeat as U.S. Open champ at Bovada.

Along with Els and McDowell other former U.S. Open champs looking for another major win at Congressional this week include Lucas Glover (66/1), Angel Cabrera (66/1), Geoff Ogilvy (50/1), Campbell (500/1),  Retief Goosen (50/1), and Jim Furyk (50/1).

The wild card in any major that is missing Woods is always Phil Mickelson. Lefty has been cursed at the U.S. Open in the past, finishing second or at least tied for second in the event five times. In 1997 Mickelson had a tough time at Congressional when he finished well back in a tie for 43rd place. Mickelson is listed at 12/1 at Bovada.
