The Memorial is not a major tournament, but it is one of the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour calendar. The 2016 edition of the Memorial gets underway in Dublin, Ohio on June 2.
Muirfield Village Golf Club is the setting, but golf fans know the course by a different name: Jack’s Place. Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus built the course in 1972, and the Golden Bear has done a tremendous job with it since. Muirfield is ranked among America’s top 20 golf courses and is within the top 50 worldwide.
Nicklaus will certainly be proud of the turnout this time around. Each of the best five golfers on the planet will be in the field, and 21 of the top 30 are also participating.
Online sportsbook Sportsbook has tabbed Jason Day as a +600 favorite, with Jordan Spieth (+700), Rory McIlroy (+700), Hideki Matsuyama (+1400), Dustin Johnson (+1800), Matt Kuchar (+2000), Rickie Fowler (+2200) and Bubba Watson (+2500) right behind them.
Spieth will be seeking to keep the momentum going after picking up his first win of the season at the Dean & Deluca Championship. The Texan is rounding into form ahead of the U.S. Open, and for the first time since his Masters collapse, he seems like a viable threat to collect another victory.
Day is the only three-time Sportsbook on the Tour this year, but he could be fade material at the Memorial. The Aussie has never performed well at Muirfield, evidenced by his best finish coming back in 2009 when he placed 27th.
McIlroy has two career top-10 finishes at Jack’s Place and clearly is comfortable with his surroundings at the tournament. David Lingmerth, who won the 2015 Memorial, is a +7000 long shot to do it again.
