As the PGA season rolls along, the eyes of the golfing world will be on San Diego this weekend when the 64th staging of the Farmers Insurance Open gets underway (formerly called the San Diego Open and Buick Invitational).
Topping the odds list at Sportsbook is last year’s Sportsbook, Jason Day (+650). Day has been one of the best players on the tour as of late, as the Aussie ended 2015 winning four of his last six events, including the PGA Championship—his first career major victory.
The PGA's cream of the crop have traditionally been finding amazing success in this tournament. Since 1996, every champion at Torrey Pines has a major win under their belt. Needless to say, it may not be the best week to chase the outsiders.
Right behind Day is American young gun Rickie Fowler. Fowler is only a week removed from garnering the crown at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship—his first appearance at the event—and could easily keep that momentum rolling in California. Fowler is +1100 at the shop to do it again this weekend.
Phil Mickelson will be making his 26th appearance at the tournament, and Lefty can never be counted out in this spot. Mickelson won on three occasions (1993, 2000 and 2001) and is coming off a strong third place finish at La Quinta last week.
Distance is clearly more important than accuracy off the tee at the Farmers Insurance Open. Forty-five golfers have placed in the top three at the tournament, but only one player ended the season in the top 50 for driving accuracy. Torrey Pines digs the long ball.
