Will Jordan Spieth Win a Major in 2016?

Jordan Spieth PGA

Jordan Spieth has had a lot of highs in his brief professional golfing career, but Sunday at the Masters was without a doubt his lowest point. Steadily building a lead through his first 63 holes, the Texan bogeyed Nos. 10 and 11 before sinking two balls into the water and finishing with his first career quadruple bogey on the 12th hole.

Amazingly, Spieth’s extremely comfortable lead evaporated and he wasn’t able to get it back, as Danny Willett capitalized on the moment and won his first career major title. Due to Masters tradition, Spieth – the 2015 champion – was forced to put the green jacket on the Englishman. Talk about a tough day at the office.

But while Spieth’s meltdown was one of the worst collapses in recent PGA history, there’s no reason to doubt him going forward. BetOnline released a prop on Spieth’s odds to win a major in 2016, with his chances on failing to do so favored at -225 odds. One major (+175), two majors (+1400) and three majors (+6600) are also available to wager on.

This seems like a severe overreaction to me. Spieth ended 2015 with two major titles, and he was in contention in all four events. The 22-year-old will be back with a vengeance, which means taking a shot on him to win at least one more major title this season looks like a solid bet.

Top golfers like Rory McIlroy and Jason Day are certainly due for another win soon, however, it’s hard to pass up the value here.

“Big picture, this one will hurt,” Spieth said after suffering the excruciating defeat at Augusta National. “There is no give up in us,” he stated, referring to his caddie, Michael Greller.

Adversity builds character, and Spieth has joined the unfortunate long list of players who’ve crumbled under intense pressure with the eyes of the golfing world solely upon them. It’s only a matter of time before he’s back in the winner’s circle again, and sports bettors would be wise to buy low on him right now.
