PGA: Valspar Championship Odds

PGA Patrick Reed

As the PGA Tour’s Florida swing chugs along, next up on the docket is the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbour. Jordan Spieth - the reigning champion - is always respected when it comes to setting betting lines, and it’s no different this weekend.

At Bovada, Spieth is a +550 favorite to reclaim the title. Just how big of a fave is the world No. 1? Henrik Stenson (+1400), Daniel Willett (+2000), Louis Oosthuizen (+2200) and Charl Schwartzel (+2500) round out the top five at the shop. Bettors beware: no one has ever won the tournament in back-to-back years, and just three of the 15 defending champs have finished in the top 10 a year later.

Due to its tough layout, driving accuracy is key at Copperhead Course. Ten of the 15 winners in the event have ranked in the top 11 for greens in regulation.

Spieth outdueled Patrick Reed and Sean O’Hair to win last year, and both Reed (+2500) and O’Hair (+7000) figure to be in the mix once again this time around. Reed is known as an emotional player, which means he’ll have extra motivation to perform well as long as he can keep his well-known temper in check.

He may not be a household name, but K.J. Choi is an attractive option at +4500. The South Korean has won this event twice before and has been in contention on two occasions so far in 2016. That’s a lot of value for a golfer who’s clearly comfortable with his surroundings.

When it comes to raw talent, Stenson is in the upper echelon of the Tour, however, there are much better options on the board. Stenson narrowly missed the playoff in 2015, but he disappointed last week at Doral (a 28th place finish). The 39-year-old has not won in the United States in two and a half years.

Luke Donald, who won the tournament in 2012, will appeal to top 10 finish bettors. Entering last year’s edition, Donald had four consecutive top-six outcomes but played poorly in last year's tournament, ending the weekend in a tie for 53rd place (+3). If you think Donald has a chance to win it all, he’s available at +4500.
