The Players Championship Preview
The Players Championship is the “5th Major” and it has a solid field and Phil Mickelson was take over the number one player in the world from Tiger Woods with a win this weekend.
The Players Championship held at the TPC Sawgrass, which is one of the toughest courses on tour and great putting is at a premium with the very hard greens. Henrik Stenson is the defending champion and the purse for the event is a whopping $9.5 million with the winner taking home a cool $1.71 million.
TPC Sawgrass is known for the 17th hole island par 3, which is where contenders turn into pretenders. The 18th hole is the second toughest finishing hole on the PGA Tour.

This year’s filed is a stellar one, but the top players of Steve Stricker and Anthony Kim both withdrew from the event because of injuries.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson both have the best odds to win the Players Championship, as each is posted at +600 at Bovada. Woods won this event in 2001, but in the past several years has not done well with only one top 10 in the last seven starts. Last week he missed the cut for only the sixth time in his last 241 pro starts. In an interesting stat Woods finished in the top three in five of the six tournaments he played in after missing the cut the previous event.
Mickelson can become the number one player in the world if he wins this weekend and Woods finishes sixth of lower. Lefty won the Players Championship in 2007 and came in second last week at Quail Hollow and would have won if Rory McIlroy had not fired a course record 62 in the final round.
Jim Furyk is at +1800 at Bovada and has played well this season and he is a local favorite at this event. He has two wins already this season and last week opened with a 75, but ended up finishing seventh. He has never won the Players Championship, but has made the cut 12 of 14 times and last year finished tied for fifth.
Ernie Els is at +1800 at Bovada has also won twice this season and he has two top 10 finishes at this event in the past four years.
Last week’s winner at Quail Hollow Rory Mcllroy is at +1800 at Bovada, but can he come back after last week’s blistering final round 62 to win the tour’s fifth Major?
Bovada has Padraig Harrington at +2000 and he had a final round 68 last week and is playing well. He has never won at the Players Championship, but he has the game to change that.
Last year’s winner of the Players Championship Henrik Stenson is at +3000 at Bovada and he will be trying to become the first player ever to win the event in back-to-back seasons. This season he has played in four events and while he has made three cuts he has not finished in the top 10.
