Belmont Stakes Odds Preview
Animal Kingdom and Shackleford go head-to-head one more time at Belmont Park this weekend in a final showdown in the Belmont Stakes.
Those horses will lock horns again for the first time since Shackleford edged Animal Kingdom by half a length at the finish line of the Preakness Stakes. If the Preakness had been just a bit longer a charging Animal Kingdom may have been able to overtake Shackleford, and that's just one reason he's the favorite in the longer Belmont Stakes. For the horse racing novice, the Belmont is the longest of the Triple Crown races at 1 1-2 miles. By comparison, the Derby is 1 1-4 miles and the Preakness is 1 3-16 miles. Animal Kingdom's excellent stamina, which he put on full display in the Derby when he overtook almost the entire race field, could give him the edge over the longer distance and is one of the big reasons he is a 5/2 favorite.
Shackleford may be Animal Kingdom's toughest challenger after besting him in the Preakness, but on the latest Belmont Stakes futures at Bovada Shackleford is listed at 5/1, while Nero is ahead of him at 7/2.
Nehro is really the big wild card for bettors in the race. He placed second in the Derby and was among the favorites on the odds for the Preakness before he was scratched just days before the race. In each of his last four races Nehro has placed second or better and he could be worth at least a few bucks at 7/2 if he can surprise both Animal Kingdom and Shackleford.
Animal Kingdom and Shackleford aren't the only horses entered in the Belmont that also ran in both the Derby and the Preakness. Mucho Macho Man is also trying his luck in the Belmont after finishing third in the Derby and sixth in the Preakness.
Mucho Macho Man's chances of breaking through with a win over the longer distance don't look good, though, and he's a 15/2 underdog at Bovada.
The only other horse from the Preakness that is also entered in the Belmont is Isn't He Perfect. He wasn't even a factor in the Preakness after finishing ninth, and isn't expected to do much in the Belmont as a 50/1 longshot.
From the Derby field there are four horses that, like Nehro, skipped the Preakness but are returning for the Belmont. They are Master Of Hounds (fifth in the Derby) at 11/2, Brilliant Speed (seventh in the Derby) at 14/1, Santiva (sixth in the Derby) at 14/1, and Stay Thirsty (12th in the Derby) at 20/1.
