Kentucky Derby: Dortmund Betting Odds

Dortmund is one of two top contenders on the odds to win the 2015 Kentucky Derby trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, but some horse racing handicappers and bettors may argue he has a better chance to win the 141st Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs than favorite American Pharoah based on their respective post positions.

Dortmund drew the No. 8 position, with horses in that spot winning eight times previously, the last coming in 2009 with Mine That Bird.

Updated Kentucky Derby odds better reflect the post positions, with American Pharoah drawing an outside gate. However, Dortmund has a lot more going for him than simply where he will start the first Triple Crown race of the year on Saturday.

Undefeated in six career starts, Dortmund swept three Kentucky Derby prep races in California recently, finishing first in the Robert B. Lewis, San Felipe and Santa Anita Derby in 2015.

The three-year-old chestnut colt is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his father Big Brown, who won the 2008 Kentucky Derby after entering unbeaten as well.

Jockey Martin Garcia will be looking for the second Triple Crown victory of his career, as he won the 2010 Preakness States riding Baffert’s Lookin At Lucky.
