Preakness Stakes Betting Odds
Animal Kingdom may have shocked as the underdog in the Kentucky Derby, but he's the overall favorite in the Preakness Stakes in his hunt for the elusive Triple Crown.
In the Derby Animal Kingdom was a 20/1 underdog coming out of the gate from the fifth position. If you had turned the race off halfway through you wouldn't have given Animal Kingdom a chance, as he was well back midway through the race. However, he showed great speed and stamina in overtaking almost the entire field and the leaders to win the Derby by about a length. Animal Kingdom won't surprise anyone in the Preakness, and at betED he's a +250 favorite to capture the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans. After the way he handled the 1 1/4 miles at Churchill Downs, running the 1 3/16 miles at Pimlico in the Preakness should be a breeze for Animal Kingdom.

A couple red flags for Animal Kingdom are that the Derby was his first race run on dirt, and he went into the Derby after a six-week layoff. Will his second venture on a dirt track go as well, and will the shorter rest period between races be a problem?
All 14 positions in the Preakness are expected to be filled this year, but only a select few will be filled by entrants that also ran in the Derby. Including Animal Kingdom, it looks like five or six Derby horses will also run in the Preakness. It looked like it was going to be more, but Santiva was a surprising scratch on Monday morning. The exact number of Derby horses in the Preakness won't be known until the decision on whether or not to race Nehro is made. Nehro finished second in the Derby, but his owners and trainers would not commit him to the Preakness early in the week. If he does enter the field he should give Animal Kingdom a challenge, and he's listed at +450 at betED.
With or without Nehro in the field, the horse best suited to challenge Animal Kingdom will likely be Dialed In, who is listed at +350 on the betED Preakness Stakes odds. He was the favorite in the Derby but came out flat and finished well back in eighth place. Dialed In's chance at the Triple Crown may be gone, but he does had 5.5 million reasons to go for it in the Preakness. Dialed In was the winner of two of Gulfstream Park's three major races this year – the Holy Bull Stakes and the Florida Derby. If he can also add a Preakness win he would earn a $5.5 million bonus.
Aside from Animal Kingdom, Nehro, and Dialed In, the other horses from the Derby expected to race this weekend include Mucho Macho Man (+600), Shackleford (+900), and Midnight Interlude (+1800).
