Profile on Derby Contender Gun Runner

Trainer Steve Asmussen is headed to the Hall of Fame later this summer, and has a good chance of making it an even better year when he saddles Gun Runner in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs.

The colt finished first in the Road to the Kentucky Derby points standings with 151, picking up 100 of those points with his impressive victory in the Louisiana a Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds on March 26 in his final prep.

The colt is one of the more lightly raced colts heading to the Run for the Roses with just five career starts. His current Kentucky Derby betting odds at Bovada stand at 10-1.

He broke his maiden over the Churchill Downs main track last September in his debut going a mile, then beat first level allowance company at Keeneland in his first start against winners.

He ran a decent fourth in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) in his stakes debut. That was a tough race, as the winner Airoforce was beaten just a neck in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) while runner up Mor Spirit is a Grade 1 winner and third place finisher Mo Tom is Grade 2 placed and has had a couple of rough trips in his last two starts.

Gun Runner has made just two starts this year, winning the Risen Star (G2) and then the Louisiana Derby, both outings at Fair Grounds, and will be coming into the Kentucky Derby off a six-week break.

The colt went from 20-1 to 10-1 in early Kentucky Derby wagering at Bovada after his Louisiana Derby victory.

The Louisiana Derby has been productive in recent years, not for winners but horses that have run in the money on the first Saturday of May.

Commanding Curve was second in 2014, Golden Soul was second and Revolutionary third in 2013, Nehro was the runner up in 2011 and Mucho Macho Man was third in 2011.

Two recent Belmont Stakes (G1) winners ran in the Louisiana Derby, Palace Malice in 2013 and Drosselmeyer in 2010.

By Candy Ride out of a Giant’s Causeway mare, Gun Runner has enough pedigree to handle the 1 ¼ miles and the colt has proven he can handle the Churchill Downs main track.
