Inter Milan stumbles again in Champions League action
It had looked as if Inter Milan had overcome their demons of Champions League failures, as they were in first place in Champions League Group B and could have, pretty much, won the group if they beat Panathinaikos last Wednesday.
However the Greek visitors shocked the Italian giants with a 1-0 win and sending soccer underdog bettors home extremely happy. Inter Milan still advanced to the next Group round, but there are concerns.
I watched the match and Inter dominated the match from the beginning, but simply could not find the back of the net. Inter Milan led Panathinaikos in time of possession and had more than twice as many shots (19-8).
In the 69th minute Panathinaikos scored when Jose Sarriegi put in a rebound off a great save from Inter goalie Julio Cesar off a corner kick. The visiting fans, who almost outnumbered the Inter fans and definitely were making more noise, were sent into delirium.
Inter had a few more chances, as Mario Balotelli and Julio Cruz entered the game in the second half to finish the match with four strikers. Cruz had a golden opportunity to even the score, but a late header sailed just over the crossbar.
Inter heads to the next round of Champions League, but their recent home loss brought back some painful memories. Even though Inter is the defending champions in Italian League A, and currently in first place in the domestic league, they have been a major disappointment in the Champions League in recent years.
Last year, as Inter won the Italian League A for the third straight season, they could not get past the round of 16 in the Champions League. All will be forgiven in Milan if they can advance in their next round of Group games.
Inter Milan’s next Champions League match is on December 9th against Werder Bremen. Check out the latest Champions League odds on this match and all the others.
