La Liga betting – Barcelona running away with league

Barcelona padded its lead atop La Liga and are beginning to make a mockery of the once imposing task of dominating Spanish soccer betting.

Last night, Barcelona came from behind to beat Villarreal 2-1 and now they have a 10-point lead in La Liga. Second place Sevilla could only come away with a goalless draw at RCD Mallorca earlier on Sunday.

I am in Barcelona and watching the game my girlfriend told me that the commentators said that the ten-point buffer was the biggest lead at this point in the season in the history of the Spanish First division.

Villarreal opened the scoring after a 0-0 first half, as Cani sprung the offside trap on a great through ball from Rossi and chipped a shot over Barcelona goalie Víctor Valdés to give the home side a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.

The lead did not last long, as in the 54th minute Barcelona’s Daniel Alves sent in a looping cross, which Seydou Keite barley beat Villarreal goalie Diego Lopez to the ball and headed it in to knot the score at 1-1.

In the 67th minute Barcelona took a 2-1 lead when Xavi Hernández sent a low cross and Thierry Henry stuck out his foot and knocked the ball to the back of the twine.

Villarreal had their chances late in the second half, as in the 75th minute Barcelona’s Gerard Piqué was sent off with a red card after a rough tackle.

Villarreal attacked in the in the last 15 minutes and had two point-blank shots on the goal that they could not convert.

Barcelona controlled the game, as they led in time of possession 57% to 43% and they also doubled up on shots on goal, as they had 16 shots to Villarreal’s 8.

Sevilla had the chance to take a three-point lead over Club Atlético de Madrid and Valencia CF for second place, but they could not find a way to score on a tough Mallorca defense.

Barcelona is in first place in La Liga with 41 points, Sevilla has 31 points, Atlético de Madrid and Valencia have 30 points each, and Real Madrid and Villareal share 4th place with 29 points.

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have made it to the Round of 16 in the Champions League.
