Mariners, Phillies underdog picks
A few underrated pitchers tossed gems on Wednesday and not only delivered upset wins for their teams, but also a nice payout for MLB underdog bettors.
With the Mets set to face the Brewers and their ace Yovani Gallardo on Wednesday they were a huge +210 underdog over at Bovada .
Cue Mike Pelfry and the Mets bullpen for a masterful performance. Pelfry outdueled Gallardo and threw 7 2-3 shutout innings. The Mets bullpen also silenced the Brewers’ bats and New York pulled out a 1-0 win. That’s a tough loss for Gallardo who was also solid and allowed only one run on five hits in seven innings while striking out 12.
In Toronto the Jays played to a packed house at the Roger’s Center on Canada Day and rookie starter Ricky Romero gave them all something to cheer about. The crafty lefthander went eight innings against Tampa Bay and didn’t allow a single run while striking out seven. That was Romero’s third-straight phenomenal start and he’s allowed only two runs in his last 22 innings. The Rays were a -120 favorite on the baseball moneyline with James Shields on the hill, but he couldn’t match Romero and surrendered 5 runs in a 5-0 Jays victory.
The last pitcher to deliver an upset win on Wednesday was Oakland hurler Dallas Braden. He led the Athletics against the Tigers and ace Justin Verlander as a +110 underdog at Bovada Braden tamed the Tigers and allowed only one run over seven solid innings. The A’s cracked a couple two-run homers off Verlander compliments of Jack Cust and Jason Giambi and walked away with a 5-1 win.
Yankees and Sabathia mega favorites
With only nine games on the MLB slate Thursday bettors will have to be choosy to find the profitable picks. If Seattle can somehow find a way to upset the Yanks bettors could make a small fortune. With CC Sabathia set to start the Yankees are a -300 favorite over at Bovada. It’s unlikely that Seattle starter Jason Vargas will be able to match the $160 million dollar man especially since he’s lost three of his last four games.
If you’re looking for an underdog play on Wednesday take a look at the Phillies at the Braves. The visiting Phillies are a +130 underdog at Bovada despite having undefeated J.A. Happ on the mound. In his last start Happ pitched a complete-game shutout versus Toronto, so getting him as an underdog definitely appears worth it.
