2016 MLB All-Star Game Betting Preview

We have made it to the midway point of the MLB season and have entered the week of the 87th Midsummer Classic. This year’s all-star game will take place in San Diego at the Padres’ Petco Park and online sportsbooks have all your degenerate betting needs covered.

SHARK BITES
  • The all-time record in the all-star game is 43-41 in favor of the National League.
  • The highest total at an all-star game was 21 in the 1998 13-8 American League victory.
  • The total has gone OVER 7.5 in 9 of the last 16 competitions.

Bovada has slated the NL as -120 favorites heading into the contest and has set the total at 7.5. Since 2000, however, the American League has come out on top 12 times and is currently on a three-year winning streak.

The totals seem to normally stay within reason at these all-star games, as teams are actually trying to win in order to secure home-field advantage during the World Series. Pitchers will never go more than two innings so they can throw their best stuff and managers will try to get everyone on the roster on the field at some point. Petco Park is known as being a pitcher’s ballpark so a low scoreline is a perfectly reasonable prediction.

The National League looks to have a significant pitching edge on paper as their roster boasts aces like Johnny Cueto, Stephen Strasburg, Jose Fernandez and Jake Arrieta – wow, good luck getting a notch in the hit column, American League batters.

The American League team doesn’t have as much star power on their pitching staff but it does feature a number of superstar sluggers such as Josh Donaldson, Miguel Cabrera, Edwin Encarnacion, Manny Machado and David Ortiz in what will be Big Papi’s last all-star game. Looks like we’re in for a classic power pitcher vs power hitter matchup in this one.

Players on host teams at all-star games normally get great ovations, but with the San Diego Padres puttering along this year, Wil Myers will be the only hometown talent at this year’s Midsummer Classic at Petco Park.

The top sluggers in the league will showcase their skills Monday night in the Home Run Derby. Click here for the odds.
