The Kansas City Royals will get a chance to assert themselves in the race for the AL Central division title the week of September 8 as they take on the Detroit Tigers in a series that gets underway on Monday afternoon.

The surprising Royals head into the week in first place in the AL Central standings, relegating the Tigers to the AL Wild Card race for the time being. The Tigers, however, have managed to pick up the win in four of their last five games against the Royals heading into the series opener.

The Tigers then get a home series against the Cleveland Indians this weekend, with the Tribe trying to stay alive in the AL Wild Card race. The Royals will be at home this weekend for a series against the Red Sox, with Boston having swept Kansas City in a three-game set at Fenway Park back in July.

Later in the week the Baltimore Orioles will get a visit from the New York Yankees at Camden Yards, while the Oakland Athletics play in Seattle against the Mariners, and the Los Angeles Dodgers travel up the coast for a series against the rival Giants in San Francisco.

The Giants will be looking to overtake the Dodgers for top spot in the NL West standings this week, but Los Angeles has the edge on the baseball betting trends with four victories in the last five games between the two teams. The OVER/UNDER is 3-1-1 in their last five meetings.

The race for first place in the NL Central will occupy the baseball betting spotlight the week of September 1 as the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Milwaukee Brewers all jockey for position in that division race heading into the final month of the season.

The Cardinals and Pirates will meet in St. Louis for an early-week series, which gets underway on Monday afternoon with St. Louis' Lance Lynn facing Pittsburgh's Gerrit Cole. Lynn is 14-8 with a 2.78 ERA on the season  and the Cardinals are 4-1 in his last five starts. Cole is 7-4 with a 3.65 ERA on the season, and Pittsburgh has won seven of his last eight trips to the mound.

Overall the Cardinals and Pirates have split their last 10 meetings at five wins apiece, but Pittsburgh has been surging on that baseball betting trend with three wins in its past four games against St. Louis. The UNDER has paid off for totals bettors in four of their last five matchups.

The Cardinals then hit the road to face the other NL Central contender, the Milwaukee Brewers, in a late-week series that gets underway on Thursday night. St. Louis is also 5-5 in its last 10 games against Milwaukee, and 5-2 in their last seven meetings. The OVER has paid off on the baseball betting lines in eight of their last nine matchups.

Heading into Sunday's action the Cardinals sat at +600 on the odds to win the NL Pennant at 5Dimes, with the Brewers at +610, and the Pirates at +1570.

Other series between contenders for playoff berths on the baseball betting board in the week ahead include Detroit at Cleveland, Seattle at Oakland, and Washington at the Dodgers early in the week, and San Francisco at Detroit and Kansas City at the Yankees late in the week.

The Royals, challenging for both the AL Central title and an AL Wild Card berth, split a four-game home series against the Yankees earlier in the season with the UNDER having paid out for totals bettors on the MLB odds in six of the last 10 meetings between the two teams.
