Can Devers’ Call-Up Ignite an Extinguished BoSox Offense?

The Emerald City might just belong to James Paxton after he pitched yet another gem in last night’s shutout of the Red Sox. Former throne sitter Felix Hernandez will look to reclaim his status as king when he and the Mariners take on the Crimson Hose in the second of a three-game set where top prospect Rafael Devers will make his major-league debut for Boston.

SHARK BITES
  • The Mariners are 2-5 SU and on the runline in their last 7 games when hosting an East Coast team.
  • The total has gone UNDER in the Red Sox' last 6 games against the Mariners.
  • The Red Sox are 5-0 SU in their last 5 games with Drew Pomeranz as the starting pitcher.

Now losers of three consecutive contests, the Sawx are in a definite slump, hitting .210 as a team since the break. Their call-up of young Senor Devers is perfect evidence of that as it was previously thought that they’d let the third baseman mature a little bit longer in Triple-A. A big league-worst .595 OPS from a ragtag crew of third basemen, however, forced Dave Dombrowski’s hand after he missed out on Todd Frazier.

The definition of a power hitter, Devers is expected to produce against righties at the major-league level right away. Before his call-up, the 20-year-old Dominican hit for a .311 average for Portland and Pawtucket in 86 games, slugging 20 total home runs.

As for the pitching matchup, it’s pretty close. Both Drew Pomeranz and Hernandez have ERAs in the mid-threes and both have high strikeout rates. Something to consider, though, might be Felix’s splits against Boston. In his last four starts against the Sox, Hernandez has allowed 19 earned runs in just 21 innings of work.
