After a first half that left a lot to be desired, the defending World Series champs got the back end of their schedule started in the right direction with a win and they’ll be favored in Game 2 of their interleague set with the last-place Orioles.
Taking the rock for their respective clubs will be Wade Miley (4-7, 4.97 ERA) and Jake Arrieta (8-7, 4.35 ERA). The latter of the two is having a good month of July so far with an ERA of 2.13 through two starts and is a definite bounce-back candidate for the second half.
Arrieta’s start tonight will be his first at Camden Yards since he was traded from the Orioles in 2013 and it’s one he could be dreading. In his final full season with the O’s, the righty went 2-5 in Baltimore with an ERA of 7.12 in 10 starts. Not great. After two excellent seasons with the Cubs, Arrieta has regressed to the mean this year and he could be in for an unwanted trip down memory lane this evening.
That said, a strategy that’s been effective in spots this season has been fading the O’s at home when they’re facing a righty starter. Baltimore’s lineup has hit just .253 against right-handed pitching and we all know what Arrieta is capable of.
