David Price 2016 Boston Red Sox Props

David Price Red Sox

With Major League Baseball’s free agent signing period well underway, no player has, and no other player will make a bigger splash than David Price. The Boston Red Sox had a glaring hole in their lineup atop their starting rotation and filled it by signing Price to a 7-year, $217 million contract, which is the most ever for a pitcher.

A contract of this magnitude comes with a lot of controversy and question marks. A fair criticism is that the five-time All-Star is on the wrong side of 30 with lots of miles on his arm. As a power pitcher, it’s not realistic to expect the same type of production from Price when he reaches the mid to late years of the 7-year deal.

While many find it easy to pick apart the signing (looking at you Blue Jays fans), Red Sox Nation is ecstatic about the prospect of having Price lead them back into postseason contention.

With the Price signing being a hot topic this offseason, online sportsbook Bovada has created several OVER/UNDER props on some key stats for Price in 2016.

For total wins, the O/U is set at 14.5. Price easily surpassed this number in 2015 as a member of the Tigers and Blue Jays, registering 18. Price has passed the 14.5 win mark a total of four times in seven seasons as a full-time starter.

200.5 strikeouts is the O/U number set by Bovada. Price recorded 225 K’s in 2015 and was even better in 2014, striking out 271 batters. In his seven seasons as a full time starter, he’s recorded over 200.5 strikeouts four times.

ERA is where it gets tricky as the number has fluctuated for Price quite a bit in his career. The O/U for for Price’s ERA in 2016 is set at 3.20, which is a number he did much better than in 2015 with a spectacular 2.45 ERA. Prior to this season, however, he only had an ERA better than 3.20 in 2012 and 2010. For his career, Price has a 3.09 ERA.

It's worth noting that Price has been fairly successful pitching at Fenway Park throughout his career. In 12 starts he's pitched 81 innings with a 2.56 ERA and 7.22 K/9.

Whether or not Boston gets the return on their investment won’t be known for a few years from now, but oddsmakers certainly like the boost he gives the Sox, as they’ve moved from 14-1 to 9-1 to win the 2016 World Series.
