Astros Look to Continue Utter Domination of the Athletics

Despite losing their two best starting pitchers to the disabled list, the Astros have been surviving and it’s guys like Francis Martes – the Astros’ top prospect – who have made that possible. He made his first career start last week and he pitched a gem, limiting the Rangers to just one run on five hits in a 13-2 Astros win. The baby-faced assassin will take the bump again tonight in Game 2 of four against the Athletics looking for his second W in as many starts.

SHARK BITES
  • The Astros are 12-1 SU in their last 13 games against the Athletics.
  • The Athletics are 20-11 SU at home this season.
  • The Astros are 9-2 SU in their last 11 games on the road against teams with losing records.

Sonny Gray (2-2, 4.44 ERA) will be Martes’ dance partner tonight and he’ll be trying to continue a trend that’s seen the A’s go 4-1 straight up in his last five starts at the Coliseum. The right-hander has, however, been getting roughed up of late and he’s given up eight or more hits in three of his last four starts. If this powerful ’Stros side makes that kind of contact – heads up in the outfield – there could be a few balls heading to the yard tonight.

Houston’s 112 home runs are the most in the big leagues and although the bats have cooled a little in June, the Astros are still hitting .284 as a team this month. Sportsbook them as a small road favorite, sportsbooks are a fan of Houston’s 21-8 straight-up record away from Minute Maid Field this season and they’re expecting the ’Stros to start their first winning streak since their 11-gamer ended on June 5.
