MLB All Star Game Preview

Will this finally be the year the National League stops the American League's lengthy unbeaten streak as the All-Star festivities kick off tonight in Anaheim?

Angel Stadium in Anaheim is the venue for this year's All-Star Game, and everything begins tonight with the Home Run Derby. There will be a brand new winner in the Derby this season, as last year's winner Prince Fielder failed to make the cut this time and no other former winner decided to enter the contest.

The Major League leader in home runs, Toronto's Jose Bautista, wasn't offered a spot in the Derby, so the player with the most homers in this year's contest is Miguel Cabrera with 22. He's also the current Derby favorite at 11/4, {URL=http://www.oddsshark.com/mlb/ortiz-cabrera-home-run-derby-faves}according to this article.{/URL}

The only other time Cabrera took part in the Derby in 2006 he failed to advance past the second round. Other former Derby competitors taking another swing this year include David Ortiz and Matt Holliday. Ortiz, a 3/1 underdog at Bovada, was in the Derby in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Holliday's (11/2) lone Derby entry was in 2007.

The rest of the Derby lineup at Bovada includes Corey Hart (5/1), Chris Young (10/1), Hanley Ramirez (10/1), Nick Swisher (5/1), and Vernon Wells (15/2).

The actual game goes Tuesday night as the AL looks to continue their total domination of the NL.

The AL is undefeated in the last 13 games, winning 12 of them. The only non-win for the AL was the 7-7 tie in 2002. The NL's last All-Star win came way back in 1996 when they shut out the AL 6-0. Looking to end the NL's rut is a starting lineup that includes Yadier Molina, Albert Pujols, Chase Utley, David Wright, and Hanley Ramirez in the infield, and Ryan Braun, Andre Ethier, and Jason Hayward in the outfield. Utley and Hayward are both out with injuries and will be replaced in the starting lineup.

The AL starters are Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Robinson Cano, Evan Longoria, and Derek Jeter in the infield and Carl Crawford, Josh Hamilton, and Ichiro Suzuki in the outfield. Vladimir Guerrero gets the starting nod at DH.

The only AL starter that will not play Tuesday night is Morneau, due to a concussion.

The latest odds on the Mid-Season classic have the AL as a slight favorite at -120 at Bovada. The NL is getting +100 odds, and the total was set at 8.5.
