Oli Marmol is on the hot seat

Next Manager Fired Odds: Marmol On The Hot Seat

Baseball is fun to watch, but it’s a lot less fun for managers of underachieving MLB clubs.

Every season, a few skippers feel the heat on their seats and eventually lose their jobs. The odds aren't out yet, but several managers will enter 2024 with their employment on the line.

Here's a better look at the odds on the next MLB manager fired.

National League: Managers On The Hot Seat

Oliver Marmol (Cardinals)

Yeesh. The Cards imploded in 2023 and Marmol's reputation changed from boy genius to circus ringmaster. The 37-year-old's fiery managerial style didn't mesh well with St. Louis last season, and the club's season was toast by mid-June.

After a moderate firesale at the '23 trade deadline, the Cardinals will regroup as conservative contenders in '24, but one misstep or a bumpy month could see a new manager in Mound City.

Bud Black (Rockies)

Black enters his eighth season as Colorado manager, but the Rockies haven’t had a winning year since 2018. With Kris Bryant still struggling, there aren't many positives in the mountains in 2024, and the club is staring down a sixth-straight losing season. It's time to mop up this mess and start over, starting with Black.

American League: Managers On The Hot Seat

John Schneider (Blue Jays)

Nothing against Schneider's regular-season success, but it's time for his club to start winning playoff games. Schneider is 0-4 in his last two postseason series, and there are no more excuses for a club loaded with star hitting and star pitching.

If the Blue Jays wade into mediocrity to start 2024, we could see a new manager before the All-Star break.

Aaron Boone (Yankees)

At this point, Boone must have third-degree burns on his backside. The Yankees skipper has been heavily scrutinized over the last few seasons, and his job has seemingly been under fire each of the last three winters.

New York will be aggressive in free agency, which will hopefully give Boone a better roster to work with in 2024. But if the 50-year-old doesn't start producing wins soon, he'll be kicked to the curb.

How To Bet On Next Manager Fired Odds

Betting on the next baseball manager to be fired is just like betting on any other futures odds. You should consider which manager you want to bet on (or against, I guess), but also the value of the lines. At the sportsbook, you’ll notice the futures odds are listed like this:

  • Aaron Boone -150
  • Alex Cora +150
  • Bud Black +500

In this example, Boone is the clear favorite at -150 to be fired next. If you believe that he’ll be the next manager to get the ax, you can place $150 on him to win $100 in profit if you’re right. The other two managers, Cora and Black, are more value bets, with a $100 bet on Black paying out $500 in profit in this example.
