Jake deGrom Has Been a Bright Light for the Lowly Mets

With the Mets 10 games below .500, this rivalry may not have the luster it had when the Subway Series was played out in the 2000 Fall Classic, but tonight’s pitching matchup between Sonny Gray (0-2, 3.00 ERA with the Yankees) and Jacob deGrom (13-5, 3.21 ERA) is a great one.

SHARK BITES
  • The Yankees are 5-2 in their last 7 games against the Mets.
  • The Mets are 9-2 SU in their last 11 games with Jacob deGrom as the starting pitcher.
  • Jacob deGrom has posted a quality start in 9 of his last 11 appearances.

Things may not have gone according to plan for the Mets this year but poor Jake deGrom is trying his hardest to keep his team just above the line of obscurity. If it weren’t for Max Scherzer, the long-haired righty would easily be the best hurler in the NL East this campaign and he’s been doing his best work in the Big Apple.

Gray, who’s pretty unlucky to be 0-2 at this point, has pitched well in pinstripes and has a chance to truly show his stuff against the team that has the second-worst on-base percentage in baseball in the 30 games since the all-star break.

Another subplot to keep an eye on tonight is a particular six-foot-seven slugger who has an opportunity to tie the longest streak for consecutive games with a strikeout. Aaron Judge has been in an incredible slump and at this point, it feels inevitable that he’ll break Adam Dunn’s record.
