A win at Camden Yards last night accomplished two tasks for the Yankees. It put some more distance between themselves and the pursuing Orioles and it brought the Bronx Bombers within 2.5 games of the AL East-leading Red Sox. Joe Girardi will hope for more of the same on Tuesday when he sends out 37-year-old CC Sabathia, who will be going for a fourth straight quality start.
I would compare CC to a fine wine that only gets better over the years but as he’s a recovering alcoholic, I’ll say he’s more like an aged cheddar. Sabathia has been one of the Yankees’ most consistent pitchers since the all-star break with a 3.53 ERA over eight starts but sticking with the old cheese analogy – sometimes he stinks.
Against the Orioles this season, Sabathia has a 6.94 ERA and he’s earned a win in just one of his last 10 starts vs Baltimore.
His pitching opponent, however, has been much, much worse. Jeremy Hellickson has allowed 22 earned runs in his last four starts and he’s been brutalized at Camden Yards since being acquired by the O’s. If the Orioles are going to win this evening, it’s likely they’ll have to get to Sabathia in a big way.
