Even though the Yankees are coming off a loss and are at Detroit tonight they are the slight favorites in tonight’s game.
New York Yankees (21-9) at Detroit Tigers (17-14)
Tonight’s game will be broadcast on ESPN with a start time of 7:05 EST.
Bovada has the Yankees as the slight favorite posted at -120 with Detroit at +100 with a run total of 10.
The Yankees won two of three games from the Red Sox this past weekend and are 8-2 in their last 10 games and trail Tampa Bay by .5 games in the AL East. The Tigers are 6-4 in their last 10 games and trail Minnesota by 3.5 games in the AL Central. Speaking of Minnesota they swept the Tigers last week and overall the Tigers have lost four of their last five games.
This season Detroit is 9-3 at home and New York is 11-7 on the road.
In their last games both teams lost yesterday, as New York lost to Boston 9-3 and Detroit lost to Cleveland 7-4.
Tonight’s game is the first match up between these two teams this season and last season New York won five of six games against Detroit.
Taking the mound for Detroit tonight is Dontrelle Willis (1-1 3.99 ERA), who in his last start gave up three earned runs in five innings in a no decision. On the hill for New York is Sergio Mitre (0-0 2.79), who in his last appearance gave up two earned runs in two innings in a no decision.
Mitre is making his first start of the season and he is taking Andy Pettitte’s spot, who is resting with an inflamed elbow. Mitre was 3-3 with a 7.16 in nine starts last season.
Willis has not faced the Yankees since he was with the Florida Marlins in 2006.
Detroit’s pitching has been mediocre this season ranking eighth in the AL in team ERA. They will have to deal with a Yankees’ offense that has been on fire all season and has scored the most runs in the Majors.
The Yankees bullpen will have to pitch well tonight, as Mitre will be limited to 70 pitches.
Detroit is 4-0 in their last four home games against right-handed starters.

In the third game of this four game series Jeremy Bonderman (1-1 5.74 ERA) is scheduled to go for Detroit Phil Hughes (4-0 1.69 ERA) is scheduled to go for New York. The series finale is a sweet pitchers’ match up with Justin Verlander (3-2 4.50 ERA) on the hill for Detroit and CC Sabathia (4-1 3.04 ERA) on the mound for New York.
