NLCS Odds: Phillies Favored Over Giants

Oddsmakers believe the performance of Roy Halladay, who just tossed the second-ever no-hitter in postseason play, makes it easy to list Philadelphia as -170 favorites in the opener of the NLCS.

And at shops such as Bodog, the prospects of the Giants pulling a series upset are so slim they have the Phillies at -250 favorites.

NLCS odds are shaping up as a duel between pitching staffs, with some star power at the plate as well. Halladay (21-10, 2.44 ERA) led the league in wins, shutouts, and complete games with nine. [ Get the latest Phillies Giants odds and matchup reports on the ALCS as well here at OddsShark.com ]

These numbers tell the tale that Doc had a terrific season, and his stunning Game 1 outing in the NLDS only emphasizes why oddsmakers give the Phillies the betting edge.

Sometimes the numbers don’t always tell the story though. There are reasons to look at the +150 underdog Giants as a possible bet in the opener. Tim Lincecum, who fired 14 strikeouts in his victory in the NLDS and will be the Game 1 hurler for the Giants, is 3-1 with a 3.17 ERA in seven starts, but more recently is 2-1 with a remarkable 1.45 ERA, against the Phillies. Lincecum was also better on the road.

The Giants' Game 2 starter, lefty Jonathan Sanchez, is 3-1 in five starts with a 2.48 ERA. Only Game 3 starter Matt Cain is winless against the Phillies in five starts. The Phillies will go with Roy Oswalt for Game 2 against Sanchez, while Cole Hamels will match up with Cain for the third contest of the series.

Joe Blanton will take to the mound in Game 4 for the Phillies, and the Giants have pencilled in Madison Bumgarner for that game.

This is the first head-to-head meeting between the two Cy-Young-winning ace pitchers, and fans will be treated to a gem if the tale of the tape is any measure.

Most books also give Philadelphia the advantage at the plate, especially in Game 1. Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, and Ryan Howard all hit from the left side of the plate. Lincecum has had his struggles with lefties - they have hit .254 off him, while he has limited right-handed batters to a .229 average.

The Giants have a set of right-handed batters with red-hot rookie Buster Posey, big-swinging Pat Burrell, and the clutch-hitting Cody Ross, who was the hero in the NLDS for San Francisco. These guys can hit against any pitcher in the league if they are on, but Halladay does line up better against right-handed hitters.

The Giants hold the edge in the bullpen, and it will be necessary to get to the 21-game winner early if they want to get the upset.

The first pitch is set to be thrown out at 7:57 p.m. ET at Citizens Bank Park in the City of Brotherly Love on Saturday.
