Phillies at Braves Pick

The red hot Braves are the favorites tonight at home over the struggling Phillies and they recently overtook Philadelphia for first place in the NL East.

Philadelphia Phillies (28-22) at Atlanta Braves (29-22)

Bovada has the Braves posted at -140 with the Phillies at +120 with a run total of 7.5 runs.

Tonight in a NL East match up the Braves host the Phillies, who have lost two in a row, seven of their last 10, and lost to the Braves in last night’s game.

The Phillies’ offense was not a major concern coming into this season, but it is their offense that has really hurt them in their recent slide. How bad is it for Philly? Well, in their last nine games they have scored a grand total of 10 runs.

To end the month of May the Phillies went 2-7 and in that nine-game span only hit .187.

In last night’s win the Braves moved ahead of the Phillies for first place in the division and Philadelphia has not been in first place in the NL East since May 1st.

Taking the mound for the Braves tonight is Tim Hudson (5-1 2.24 ERA), who in his last start gave up two earned runs in four innings in a no decision. Cole Hammels (5-3 3.82 ERA) is on the hill for the Phillies tonight and in his last outing he gave up only two earned runs in six innings, but still took the loss.

Hudson is 0-5 with an ERA of 4.01 in his last nine starts against the Phillies and in those starts the Braves’ offense has only averaged 1.70 runs per game.

Hammels has already beaten the Braves earlier this season and after losing his first two starts against them he is 8-2 with a 3.70 ERA in 13 starts since.

Philadelphia is 5-1 in Hamels' last six starts and Atlanta is 2-5 in Hudson’s last seven home starts and 0-5 in Hudson’s last five home starts vs. a team with a winning record.

In the last eight games between these two teams the total has gone Under six times.

In the last game of this three-game series tomorrow afternoon Derek Lowe (7-4 4.86 ERA) is slated to start for the Braves and Kyle Kendrick (3-2 5.02 ERA) is scheduled to go for the Phillies. Lowe is toed for second in the NL with wins this season.

Pick: Even though Hudson has struggled against the Phillies in his career he is finally 100% healthy and the pitcher that the Braves though he would be after coming over from Oakland. He will have a solid start tonight and the Phillies will continue to struggle on offense, as the Braves will win tonight and look for the series sweep tomorrow.
