Taking an emphatic 10-3 win in the opener last night, the Pirates opened Game 2 of their series against the Giants as the underdogs with a matchup vs Madison Bumgarner staring the Bucs right through their eye patches. Mad Bum has yet to earn a win this season, though, and the trends point vehemently in the opposite direction of the Giants this evening.
Since returning to baseball from his dirt bike injury, Bumgarner has not been the same threat he’s been in recent years and this Pirates lineup has success against the southpaw in limited action. Yet to have a good start at AT&T Park this year, Mad Bum will have to be sharp if he’s to work his way through a lineup that’s hit for a .306 average since the all-star break.
Former top prospect Jameson Taillon (6-3, 3.08 ERA) will toe the rubber for the surging Pirates in search of his fourth win in five starts. The 25-year-old is one of the brightest lights in the Pittsburgh organization and he’s been illuminating the path to victory for the Bucs this season.
Trends always end but given the value Pittsburgh is offering this evening, it’s tough to fade the dogs. The Giants are one of the worst teams in baseball right now and there’s no point betting them as faves.
