The dual collapses in Boston and Atlanta Wednesday quickly spawned some new betting odds on the future of players and managers on those teams by Thursday.
In particular, how a manager named Terry Francona could survive a 9-game collapse in September, the biggest in baseball history.
Online sportsbook however listed the Red Sox skipper as -200 to survive and be in charge at the start of the 2012 season.
They were less confident that players like David Ortiz and closer Jonathan Papelbon – who couldn’t close out the victory over Baltimore Thursday which led to the Tampa Bay Rays winning the AL Wild Card – would be back.
Ortiz, one of the faces of Red Sox Nation, was a -150 favorite to be gone. The odds were even up on Papelbon at -120 on the yes or no.
While Boston was choking away in the biggest September collapse, Atlanta was busy doing the same with the second-biggest collapse. They led the Wild Card race by 8.5 games in early September, but lost their final five games and let the Cardinals steal the spot from them.
Longtime Brave Chipper Jones has been banged up for years and now the odds of him returning seem bleak. listed him at -200 that he would retire before the start of next season.
All this ignores the fact that eight teams are lined up to play for the World Series with the Phillies a big 7/4 favorite. Only the Yankees at 4/1 are close.
The Phillies open at home Satutrday against the Cardinals and will twirl that devastating pitching rotation at St. Louis – Roy Halladay followed by Cliff Lee followed by Cole Hamels followed by Roy Oswalt. Good luck with that.
